Trojans’ big 2nd half subdues Waynesboro, 40-20

CHAMBERSBURG — A consistent passing attack and a couple of alert plays on loose balls gave Waynesboro a chance to win Friday night.

But Chambersburg had a bit too much firepower and wore the Indians down in the second half to capture a 40-20 non-league football victory at Trojan Stadium.

Antonio Harrison II

Waynesboro (1-2) had clawed to within 27-20 early in the fourth quarter. But a quick six-play scoring drive by the Trojans (2-1), followed by two consecutive takeaways by the Chambersburg defense, sealed the Indians' fate.

"I was proud of our kids because they didn't hang their heads or be negative when things didn't go our way," Trojan coach Mark Luther said. "It was a tight game and we bounced right back."

The first big turning point came at the end of the first half. Already ahead 20-7, Chambersburg drove to the Boro 19 with just under 30 seconds left. But a run and two incompletions forced a field goal try from 36 yards out by Trever Luther.

The kick was blocked and the ball bounced out near midfield. After several seconds of scrambling, Waynesboro's Gunnar Shifflett emerged with the ball and took it to the house, bringing the Indians within 20-13 at halftime.

Coach Luther said, "That was a big opportunity we missed there. And when it was blocked, our guy missed it, then two of their guys missed it and it was laying there between a couple of guys. Then (Shifflett) took off with it and we had nobody else around."

Brady Deneen

Chambersburg scored the first touchdown of the second half on a 7-yard run by Dayre Senft, but Waynesboro came right back with an impressive drive of 12 plays. Quarterback Rashawn Hewitt was 6-for-6, including a 7-yard scoring pass to Ethan Alldredge, who made a great catch at the pylon.

Now it was only 27-20 in the Trojans' favor.

But Chambersburg put together a quick and efficient scoring drive to match that touchdown. Imani Watson ran four times for 36 yards and QB Riley Harmon connected twice with Jermere Jones, including a 22-yard scoring strike with 8:42 left.

Luther said, "I think that one put the game away, and then we got a couple of turnovers to seal it."

Brady Deneen made an interception, which led to a 1-yard scoring run by Antonio Harrison on fourth down to make it 40-20, and then the Trojans recovered a fumble on Waynesboro's next play from scrimmage.

Harmon had a good night, hitting on 20 of 32 passes for 315 yards and three TDs, and Jones had a huge second half, catching five balls for 93 yards, giving him 7 for 118 for the game.

Trever Luther (4-76), Jake Folmar (3-56) and Rhaigeon Parker (3-24) were also heavily involved in the passing game as seven different players had receptions. Folmar and Jason Chambers also had scoring catches.

Chambersburg's running game also did well at times. Harrison led with 77 yards on 15 carries and scored twice, but Senft (1 TD) and Watson also helped out.

Luther said, "I was disappointed that we had some chances in the first half and just didn't finish. We made some good plays and did not turn them into points. But hats off to Waynesboro — they played hard and took advantage of some things."

The Trojan defense limited the Indians' wing-T rushing attack, allowing only 16 net yards rushing. Hewitt, however, using mostly short passes, completed 15 of 22 for 192 yards.

"We did pretty well against the wing-T, but they did catch us a couple of times on passes," Luther said.

Notes: Boro's first TD came on a recovered fumble when Nathan Nolan ran for 10 yards to the Trojan 3, fumbled, and his teammate, Alldredge fell on the ball … Next Friday, Chambersburg hosts Central Dauphin, while the Indians host rival Greencastle-Antrim.
