Trojan boys soccer takes down CV, 2-0

NEW KINGSTOWN — Chambersburg proved to be effective opportunists on Wednesday night.

The Trojans lost the battle of statistics and the possession percentage to Cumberland Valley, but came out on top in the only stat that matters — goals — and handed the Eagles a 2-0 Mid Penn Commonwealth defeat on the road.

CV (6-1-2, 4-1-1 MPC), which was ranked No. 2 in District 3,  lost its first game of the season and Chambersburg climbs to 7-3 (4-2 MPC).

"We don't have the control we did last year, or the game management skills, but we do have good players going forward," Trojan coach Corey Grove said. "CV always has such technical players and we knew they'd have the ball the majority of time. So we defended for our lives tonight and it worked."

Part of that reason it worked was that goalkeeper Drew Cover not only made 9 saves, including one fine diving stop, but he ranged far out of his goal to break up plays.

Grove said, "He was absolutely incredible tonight. He came out to collect a lot of balls."

The coach also praised his defensive line of Reed Myers, Adrian Olvera, Ty Nelson and Ayden Findley, and Dilynn Fisher played the final 15 minutes.

"They played extremely hard and put their bodies on the line," Grove said.

The first goal came on a free kick. Olvera sent a kick over the top to the far past and Luca Gaisbauer was there to head it into the CV net.

Chambersburg, which lost 2-1 to the Eagles earlier in the season, kept that 1-0 lead until the final 30 seconds when a ball was cleared out to Michael Cespedes, who beat a defender 1 v 1 and finished on a breakaway.

"With the players we have up top, we always have a chance to score," Grove said. "They had to press up and we took advantage."

Cumberland Valley led in shots (14-6) and corner kicks (5-3). The Trojans have won three straight games and six of their last seven.
