Herd sends Trojans to defeat for 2nd time this season

CHAMBERSBURG — With the new foul rules in place for the 2023-24 basketball season (no more 1-and-1's), holding a lead in the fourth quarter is a huge advantage.

Carlisle used an 8-0 third-quarter run to take the lead and never trailed again, and handed Chambersburg a 44-37 Mid Penn Commonwealth defeat Tuesday night at CASHS Field House.

"Late in the game, had we gotten the lead, we could have swung it our way," Trojan coach Shawn Shreffler said. "(The new rules) make it tough. The strategy has changed."

Chambersburg (10-4, 6-3 MPC) tied the game 33-33 early in the fourth on a layup from Jermere Jones on a pass from Ari Snyder. Later, Jones found J.J. Kelly for a fast-break bucket to bring the Trojans to within 36-35.

But two free throws by Parker Smith and a layup by Jaylon Smith at the end of a long Thundering Herd possession with 2:08 left made it 40-35. Another layup with 0:52 left by Jaylon Smith pretty much sealed the Carlisle win.

In the fourth period, the Herd (13-3, 8-2 MPC) was 5-for-8 at the line, while the Trojans were 0-for-1. For the game, Chambersburg was only 3-for-8 and Carlisle 10-for-15.

The Trojans' defense held the two Smiths — both prolific scorers — well below their average: they combined for just 19 points (10 for Parker and 9 for Jaylon). But Luke Fischer came through with 11 points and Lucas Ream hurt the Trojans by hitting a trio of threes with a very unconventional shot.

On the other side, Kelly scored 19 points and Jones and Landon Buhrman had 6 each.

Shreffler said, "We didn't get the balance we needed at either end of the floor. Our defense was pretty solid in the first half, except that sometimes we gave them a really easy look and they capitalized. If we hadn't done that, we could have gotten some separation then."

The Herd scrapped on the boards and were able to limit the number of easy baskets for Chambersburg.

"I don't have the numbers, but the perception is that they beat us on the boards," Shreffler said, "and we knew we had to win that battle."

Carlisle also used a slower pace to keep the Trojan under wraps. They were very patient against Chambersburg's 2-3 zone and ran a lot of clock on most possessions.

Shreffler said, "With a little quicker pace, we play better. But both teams did what they had to do. It was a real battle."

NOTES: All of Chambersburg's makeup games are now set up: Feb. 3, Dunks for Drew vs. Greencastle-Antrim; Feb. 5, at Cumberland Valley, and Feb. 12, at Altoona … The Trojans' 37-point total was their lowest of the season … Chambersburg hosts CD East on Friday at 7:30.
