CV takes down Trojan boys for 2nd time

BOYS BASKETBALL
Cumberland Valley 63, Chambersburg 54: The first-place Eagles outscored the Trojans 16-10 in the third period to take a 12-point lead, then never let Chambersburg get closer than 7 points down the stretch in a Mid Penn Commonwealth clash at The Dome on Monday night.

Jermere Jones

CV (17-3, 12-1 MPC) remained at the top of the Commonwealth standings, while Chambersburg, which had a four-game winning streak coming in, falls to 14-5, 9-4 MPC).

Trojan coach Shawn Shreffler said, "They were better than us tonight. Their skill level was very high, and they executed really well, especially at the offensive end of the floor."

Creston Austin led the Eagles with 8 points in the decisive third period, including one play in which the Trojans made a steal and Austin stole it right back and made a layup.

To open the fourth period, Austin scored on a layup, and Jared Dolinpio made a fast-break bucket to push CV to its largest lead at 54-48.

Chambersburg got a jumper from J.J. Kelly and a 3-pointer from Ari Snyder on a feed from Kelly to make it 57-47 halfway through the last quarter. But after a steal, a Trojan missed a layup, and the Eagles used a play after a timeout to spring Aidan Diehl for a back-breaking layup.

The Trojans had one more run in them — a free throw by Landon Buhrman, a tough shot inside by Jermere Jones and a rebound basket by Buhrman, making it 59-52 with 1:05 left, but Cumberland Valley was able to run the clock out.

Kelly ended up with 21 points and Jones scored 17, as they combined for all but 6 of the Trojans' baskets. CV had four players in double figures — Austin (18), Nolan Buzalka (13) and Dolinpio and J.J. Lebo each with 11.
