Boys hoops defeats Hempfield

BOYS BASKETBALL
Chambersburg 63, Hempfield 52: Trailing by a point early in the third quarter Wednesday night, the Trojans zipped to a 15-4 run to take the lead for good against the Black Knights and secured a quality non-league victory on the road.

"It was a really tough game against a good, disciplined team that is fighting for their playoff lives," Trojan coach Shawn Shreffler said.

After Hempfield (11-9), which was ranked No. 12 in the District 3 rankings in 6A, took a 25-24 lead, Chambersburg (15-5) exploded. J.J. Kelly gave his team the lead with a three-point play, then Ari Snyder buried a 3-pointer. Kelly hit a jump shot, then finished an alley-oop dunk from Snyder for a 34-25 edge.

The Black Knights got a pair of free throws from Spencer Troyer and a bucket by Caden Axe, but a foul shot by Colton Cornwell, a Kelly jumper in the lane and a three by Grayson Kegerreis bumped the Trojan lead to 40-29.

With 5:32 left in the fourth period, Hempfield's Ben Troyer scored the 1,00th point of his career. He led his team with 24 points.

But after the Black Knights had pulled to within 50-43, Jermere Jones made a steal and finished at the other end with 3:10 left for a 52-43 lead.

Shreffler said, "I thought No. 13 (Nick Deeg) and No. 30 (Ben Troyer) would present problems for us defensively, and they did. However, Ari really competed at a high level tonight at both ends of the court and limited (Deeg's) impact on the game.

"It was a team effort on (Troyer), but Landon (Buhrman) played him tough and along with his teammates made him work hard for his points."

Kelly piled up 25 points for Chambersburg, Snyder tossed in a career-high 14, Buhrman scored 8 and Kegerreis added 7.

Shreffler said, "J.J. had a strong game, lifting us up after we got off to a slow start. Jermere battled through sickness and gave us what he could. His steal was a big play that kept them at bay. Grayson gave us a great spark off the bench."
