Trojan boys take 2nd place in Mid Penn swimming, girls finish 7th

NEW KINGSTOWN — Chambersburg claimed four first places at the Mid Penn Conference swimming championships on Friday and Saturday, but it wasn't quite enough to overtake the host school, Cumberland Valley, for the boys team title.

Alex Kaczmark

The Eagles scored 383 points and the Trojans had 331, followed by Central Dauphin with 271.

"This was our highest finish at these championships since they combined AA and AAA back around 2011," Chambersburg coach Chad White said.

Derek Estep was a part of two school records. He won the 200 IM in 1:52.57 to break his own record, and the 400 freestyle relay team of Alex Kaczmark, Amir Tasker, Jed Ritchie and Estep now hold the team record with a winning clocking of 3:07.38.

White said, "That 400 relay time currently ranks No. 3 in the state."

Estep also took first place in the 100 freestyle in 45.78 and Kaczmark was the champion in the 100 butterfly in 50.92.

The Trojans piled up four runner-up finishes — Tasker in the 200 free (1:43.26), Cristian Pong in the 100 butterfly (51.72), Tasker in the 100 free (46.86) and Ritchie in the 500 free (4:45.40).

Chambersburg also had four third-place finishes — Cullen McGraw, Ethan White, Pong and Ritchie in the 200 medley relay (1:39.97), Kaczmark in the 200 free (1:43.26), Ritchie in the 200 IM (1:58.11) and Pong in the 100 backstroke (53.63).

Coach White said, "The guys swam really great this weekend with little to no rest going into it. We will have the District 3 meet in three weeks, where we'll hope to improve on these times and do well in the team standings."

Other finishes in the top 10 included Keagan Myers (7th in diving, 375.20); McGraw (5th 500 free, 4:54.36); Ethan White (7th 500 free, 4:56.49) and White (8th 100 breaststroke, 1:02.53).

Margot Ritchie

On the girls side, Chambersburg came up with a seventh-place finish with 111 points. State College won with 570, followed by CV, Hershey and Waynesboro.

Trojan coach Hali Cormany said, "The girls swam lights out this weekend. Every girl had a personal best or season best in an individual event or relay split. I'm really proud of the girls and how they handled the weekend."

Margot Ritchie produced Chambersburg's best finish, taking third in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:55.01. Ritchie also finished 4th in the 100 backstroke in 59.00.

The 200 medley relay team of Ritchie, Hailey Fegan, Abby Caltrider and McKenzie Wicks placed 4th in 1:54.04, and the 200 freestyle relay team of Fegan, Caltrider, Lilly Evans and Ritchie finished 6th, in 1:43.00.

Caltrider placed ninth in the 100 butterfly in 1:03.35.

Cormany said, "We dropped a lot of time in our 200 medley and 200 free relays, which was really impressive. Margot had a great weekend."
