Trojans crush Altoona to finish 17-5 in regular season

BOYS BASKETBALL
Chambersburg 69, Altoona 41: The Trojans passed their last test of the regular season with flying colors Monday night, building a big lead early on their way to a 69-41 Mid Penn Commonwealth victory over the Mountain Lions in Altoona.

Chambersburg finished the regular season with a 17-5 record (10-4 MPC).

Although it's not official yet, it appears the Trojans will be the No. 4 seed for the District 3 Class 6A playoffs. That means they would receive a bye for Tuesday's first round and host a quarterfinal game on Friday, Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. against the winner of the No. 5 seed (currently Central Dauphin, 16-6), and the No. 12 seed (Dallastown, 13-9).

"I don't ever recall four Commonwealth teams in the top-five seeds of districts — I have to think that's extremely rare," Chambersburg coach Shawn Shreffler said.

Central York is No. 1, followed by Cumberland Valley, Carlisle, Chambersburg and CD.

The Trojans gave Altoona little room to breathe early in Monday's game, scooting out to a 19-7 lead. It was 33-14 by halftime.

Shreffler said, "We came out very focused, especially on the defensive end, and it carried over into our offense. If we didn't get something great in transition, we were very patient and shared the ball for something really good in the half-court. A lot of guys contributed to tonight's effort."

J.J. Kelly scored 29 points to continue his current hot streak. In his last seven games, Kelly has averaged 26.85 points.

Colton Cornwell scored 9 points for the Trojans and Jermere Jones and Ari Snyder each added 8.

"Tonight was the culmination of a seven-game run (in 2 weeks) to end our regular season, which led to the first-round bye," Shreffler said. "We look forward to using the extra time to get better and prepare for a tough opponent in front of our home fans."
