LEWISBURG — The Chambersburg boys swim team put in a hard day of work Wednesday.

The payoff for the Trojans was an impressive spot in the team standings after Day 1 of the PIAA Class 3A Swimming Championships at Bucknell University.

Chambersburg is seventh in the team race with 69 points, behind Springfield-Delco and North Penn, tied for first with 129 points, North Allegheny 108.5, Conestoga 94 and LaSalle College 83.

Amir Tasker

"The boys currently sit in seventh place, which, if they can maintain or move up, would be the best team finish ever for Chambersburg (8th was the previous best)," Trojan coach Chad White said.

Derek Estep scored a bunch of points for Chambersburg. He placed third in the 200 freestyle, seventh in the 100 butterfly and anchored the 200 freestyle relay to a sixth-place finish.

White said, "Derek (6 races, including prelims and finals), Alex (Kaczmark, 6 races), Amir (Yasker, 4 races) and Cristian (Pong, 4 races) had a very demanding day, without much rest between races, and did a wonderful job."

In the 200 free, a race he placed first in last year, Estep swam a time of 1:39.66, which was a little more than his winning time of 1:38.50. He finished behind Can Yaniay of Conestoga (1:36.66), who was the runner-up last year, and Sam Huggins of State College (1:38.05), who was third last year.

In the same event, Tasker placed 10th with a time of 1:41.43 and Kaczmark was 13th in 1:41.66.

Estep also earned a medal in the 100 butterfly, finishing in a time of 50.25; the winner, Jacob Johnson of Springfield-Delco, posted a time of 45.70. Kaczmark placed 13th in 50.80.

The other medals were picked up by the 200 freestyle relay in the final event of Day 1. Chambersburg's team of Kaczmark, Tasker, Pong and Estep hit the wall in 1:25.28, which broke their own school record of 1:25.39 they had set in the morning prelims. Springfield-Delco won the event in 1:22.28.

White said, "The 200 free relay was our first relay team to get medals (at states) since the last '90s, and has an excellent chance of qualifying for All-American (which is the top 100 times in the country)."

Also in the morning prelims, the Trojans' 200 medley relay team (Pong, Ethan White, Kaczmark, Cullen McGraw) posted a time of 1:38.95, which was 26th; Jed Ritchie took 17th in the 200 IM in 1:56.09, just missing the consolation final race; and Pong was 18th in the 100 fly in 51.26.

In Class 3A girls, Chambersburg's Margot Ritchie swam the 200 freestyle, and her prelim time of 1:52.62 was 25th best.

Waynesboro's Eve Phillips qualified at No. 6 in the 50 free with a time of 23.49.
