Boys sweep, Girls split with Altoona and CV

BOYS TRACK & FIELD
Trojans beat Altoona, CV: The Chambersburg boys track team opened its season with a pair of wins, over the Mountain Lions and Eagles, in a Mid Penn Commonwealth double dual meet at CV on Tuesday afternoon.

Blake Mallast

The Trojans (2-0, 2-0 MPC) defeated Altoona 113-37 and Cumberland Valley 85-65. Chambersburg placed first in 12 of the 18 events.

"Our 4 x 800 and 4 x 100 relays highlighted the meet," Chambersburg coach Jim Boyer said. "Blake Mallast showcased his speed on the track, winning the 100 and 200. And in the field, J.J. Kelly won the high jump, long jump and triple jump."

The 4 x 100 relay team of Kason Besecker, Imari Watson, Mallast and Antonio Harrison won in 42.10, and the 4 x 800 team of Ari Snyder, Kaden Rife, Liam Kitkpatrick and Owen Shrader hit the line in 8:12.66.

Mallast posted winning times of 10.93 in the 100 and 22.199 in the 200. Also on the track, Shrader won the 800 in 1:59.89, Kirkpatrick triumphed in the 1600 in 4;37.33 and Snyder won the 3200 in 9:47.56.

Kelly matched his PIAA-winning height of 6-8 in the high jump, and hit 21-5 in the long jump and 44-7.5 in the triple jump.

Peter Mertz won the discus with a throw of 157-8 and was second in the shot put, while Jude Grillo placed first in the javelin at 150-10.

GIRLS TRACK & FIELD
Trojan girls split 2 meets: Chambersburg went 1-1 in a season-opening Mid Penn Commonwealth double dual meet against Altoona at Cumberland Valley at CV on Tuesday afternoon, falling 87-63 to the Mountain Lions and besting the Eagles 93-57.

Lexi Boyd

"Altoona is phenomenal — that's the best team of theirs I've seen since I've been here," Trojan coach Chris Monheim said. "We gave them a pretty good meet, and I was pleased to come out of that 1-1."

Natalia Holmes produced a big day for Chambersburg (1-1, 101 MPC) in the sprints. Holmes won the 100 in 12.55 and the 200 in 25.80. She also anchored the winning 4 x 100 relay team to a win in 50.27, along with Jaxin Frazer, Jahnaya Wimberley and Leshae Hang.

Lexi Boyd was also busy in the distance races — she won the 800 in 2:29.79 and took second in the 1600 (5:17.79) and 3200 (11:57.02).

Monheim said, "Holmes dominated the sprints and we had her in four events. Boyd ran in four distance events and we rarely have anybody do that, but she had a personal best in the 1600. Frazer was scoring points all over the place.

"Marlee Jackson got some points in both of the hurdles events and Katy Weller had a good day in the 400 and a relay. And we had a nice surprise in the discus when Serafina Richards, a freshman, took second (93-6)."
