Trojan softball rips through Altoona, 12-0

FAYETTEVILLE — It was almost too easy for Chambersburg.

The Trojans scored 7 runs in the bottom of the first inning (helped by 4 walks and 2 hit batters) and five more in the second (with 2 walks and 2 hit batters) and strolled to a 12-0 Mid Penn Commonwealth victory over Altoona at Norlo Park on Wednesday afternoon.

Now sitting at 3-0 (1-0 MPC), Chambersburg has outscored its opponents 34-0. It won't be that easy on Thursday, weather permitting, when they play at rival Central Dauphin.

"It's a little frustrating (with a game like this), because it doesn't do anything to get us ready for our big game tomorrow," Chambersburg coach Chris Skultety said. "We came out flat, then got a little excited, then went flat again. I'm sure they'll be more enthusiastic tomorrow."

The first two Mountain Lion pitchers, starter Charlie Schneider and Lily Snyder, had command issues.

Schneider faced 13 batters in the first inning and allowed seven runs on three hits. Karley Skultety nearly ripped the cover off the ball on a double to left, Malia Cramer's base hit over the shortstop drove in two runs and Marley Onomastico singled to center for another run.

Seven Trojan batters reached base without hits — 4 walks, 2 hit batters and an error — plus Altoona had a wild pitch, a throwing error and Chambersburg stole 3 bases.

Against Snyder in the second inning, two hit batters and a walk loaded the bases. One run scored on a wild pitch, pinch-hitter Addisyn Williams belted a double to center to plate two runs, pinch-hitter Erissa Varner smacked a triple to right for an RBI and the final run scored on a fielder's choice grounder by Kori Leedy.

"The pinch-hitters did well (3-for-4, 4 RBIs), and good for them," coach Skultety said. "We got everybody into the game again."

Sanay Jones went the first three innings on the mound to get the win. She gave up just one hit and two walks, and both players that walked were picked off first base.

Coach Skultety said, "That was a good first start for Jones. She got the jitters out. She settled in nicely and threw strikes."

NOTES: Central Dauphin was defeated 1-0 by Cumberland Valley on Wednesday as CV ace Sydney May threw a no-hitter … At one point, the Trojans had 3 consecutive batters with 2 plate appearances and each of them had a walk and had been hit by a pitch.
