Mifflin County 30, Chambersburg 26: It came down to bonus points and one razor-thin call, but the Huskies prevailed over the Trojans in a Mid Penn Commonwealth Division wrestling match Thursday night at CASHS Field House.

Both teams accrued six wins (there was no match at 106), but Mifflin County scored four pins to Chambersburg’s one pin and two major decisions, and that was enough points to win.

The bout that may have ultimately decided the match came at 160. The Trojans’ Ryder Davenport led 2-0 after one, but Andon Wagner rallied in the second on a penalty point, an escape and a takedown to lead 4-2. Davenport tied it 4-4 with a reversal, then immediately let Wagner up to try for the winning takedown.

And, with the clock winding down, he thought he had that takedown. Davenport muscled Wagner down to the mat with a headlock and appeared to be ready to score and add back points. However, the official stopped the match and ruled that Davenport did not have the headlock in properly and gave a penalty point to Wagner, who ended up winning, 6-4.

“He said that Ryder was locked behind the shoulder, sort of draped across the shoulder rather than having his arm,” Trojan coach Matt Mentzer said. “It was an extremely competitive match and a questionable call didn’t go Ryder’s way. Unfortunately, that was a call that could have determined the match.”

If that result was reversed, it could have been a 29-27 Chambersburg win.

The Huskies, who finish 7-7 (2-3 MPC), but are still ranked in the state, used the four pins to build their lead. They also got a quality win at 126, a 3-0 decision by Deakon Schaeffer over Luke Mentzer.

For Chambersburg, which finished with an 11-10 record (1-4 MPC), Ethan Faytol scored a pin at 215, Karl Shindledecker (120) and Anthony Colangelo (138) scored major decisions, and Kelby Mixell (145) and Aiden Hight (189) won decisions.

Shindledecker controlled the match and defeated previously unbeaten Hunter Johnson, 8-0, to end his regular season with a 12-0 record and a No. 3 ranking in the state.

Mentzer said, “That was a good win for Karl over a state-ranked kid. He had to wrestle hard for six minutes.”

Colangelo scored five points early in the bout against Parker Kearns and added five late on a throw to win 12-5. Mixell used takedowns in the first two periods to blank Jacob Cunningham, 4-0.

“Anthony and Kelby started as freshman and they were pretty raw,” Mentzer said, “but they have put in the time and have developed, and now they are solid kids to run out there.”

It was possible that a match at 172 between Mifflin County’s Trey Kibe a PIAA champion in 2019 and the Trojans’ Tate Nichter was in the offing, but Mentzer held Nichter out with a nagging injury.

BOYS BASKETBALL
CD East 55, Chambersburg 46: The Panthers jumped out to a 14-7 lead after one quarter and never trailed in a Mid Penn Commonwealth win over the Trojans on Thursday night.

Chambersburg had it down to a six-point deficit in the second half, but couldn’t get any closer.

Trojan coach Shawn Shreffler said, “Our guys continue to fight. I’m seeing improvements from both the team and individuals, but to be even more competitive as a team we must value each possession, get better on the glass, improve our transition game and execute better in the half-court.”

Gus Mace poured in four 3-pointers and led Chambersburg (0-8, 0-6 MPC) with a career-high 16 points. Jacob Bassham and Carter Sollenberger each added 8 points to the cause and Jayden Jones scored 6.

For CD East (7-3), Jaiden Baltimore-Jackson led with 14 points.

Chambersburg travels to Harrisburg for a game Friday night.

BOYS SWIMMING
Central Dauphin 99, Chambersburg 31: The Trojans collected a pair of first-place finishes in their final Mid Penn Commonwealth dual meet of the season against the Rams.

Joseph Decker turned in a time of 2:07.86 to win the 200 freestyle for Chambersburg (2-3, 2-3 MPC), while Aidan McMillen was victorious in the 100 freestyle in 59.98.

“Decker put up a 200 free time that will will be very close to making it into Mid Penns,” Trojan boys coach Chad White said. “He and Bryce Smiley achieved season-best times today.”

Also for Chambersburg, McMillen turned in a time of 25.85 as the runner-up in the 50 free race, and Jacob Shifler placed second in the 100 backstroke, posting a time of 1:10.26.

GIRLS SWIMMING
Central Dauphin 131, Chambersburg 37: The Rams prevented the Trojans from taking any first places in a Mid Penn Commonwealth meet on the road Thursday afternoon.

Chambersburg (2-3, 2-3 MPC) did put up a pair of runner-up places — both by Maddie Shifler. She swam 2:30.6 to take second in the 200 freestyle, and posted a time of 5:15.07 to come in second in the 400 free.

“Both teams did a great job of racing when they are tired,” White said. “They’ve had some tough practices this past week. We are looking toward the Mid Penns next weekend, and the athletes should swim well with some rest and good meet preparation.”

Also for the Trojans, Faith Asbury placed third in the 200 IM, Emily Stroble was third in the 400 free and Megan Brandt posted a season-best time.
