NEW KINGSTOWN — Shippensburg’s Julia Strine had a very successful night Friday in the Mid Penn Swimming Championships at Cumberland Valley H.S.

Strine captured first place in the Class 3A 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:02.14 to break the school record and the Mid Penn record in the event.

Strine also placed second in the 50 freestyle in 24.07, and helped Greyhound relay teams take seventh in the 200 medley (1:58.68) and fifth in the 400 free (3:51.39).

Lauren Wetzel of Waynesboro also did well in 3A, capturing first place in the 200 IM in 2:05.63, and taking second in the 500 free in 5:08.79.

Layne Rydbom

For Chambersburg, Layne Rydbom placed seventh in the 200 IM in 2:15.94 and took eighth in the 100 butterfly in 1:00.88. The Trojans also earned a seventh in the 200 free relay in 1:46.77.

“Every girl we had competing in the three races we were representing did a personal best time and/or split,” Chambersburg girls coach Donnie Miller said. “I’m very happy for all of these girls. With everything this season presented, it would  have been easy to make excuses or become lackadaisical.

“Instead, our girls fought and competed and focused on getting better. I hope the athletes were as happy with the results as I am. They’ve been through a lot this year, yet still found success.”

Earlier in the week in diving, the Trojans’ Kate Etter placed fourth with 304.10 points, and teammate Kavia Myers was 12th with 206.35 points.

In Class 2A, James Buchanan swimmers placed in five events. The best was a fourth-place finish by Kourtney Green in the 100 breaststroke (1:16.86).

Also for the Rockets, Alexa Myers was fifth in the 500 free (6:08.64),the 200 medley relay team took sixth in 2:05.30,  the 200 free relay team was sixth in 1:53.58, Rhiannin Peterson placed seventh in the breaststroke (1:19.14) and Green was eighth in the 200 IM in 2:31.49.
