FAYETTEVILLE — The first spring sports event of the season took place Monday, and Chambersburg captured a victory, taking a 3-2 non-league win over Northern York at Norlo Park.
Picking up wins for the Trojans were Samuel Vessah at No. 1 singles, Kadyn Taylor at No. 2 singles, and the No. 2 doubles team of Scott Pettyjohn and Paul Hance.
Vessah rolled to straight set wins of 6-1, 6-1, while Taylor had to work hard for a 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 6-4 win.
Trojan coach Brad Hill said, "Sam dropped only two sets — he served well, moved well and remained in control throughout the match.
"Kadyn won a tough three-set match, battling a minor leg injury and a worthy opponent. His mental toughness really shined, as he came from behind in the first and third sets by winning key points."
Pettyjohn and Hance earned straight set wins of 6-4, 6-4.
Chambersburg was defeated at No. 3 singles (Sedrick Vessah) and at No. 1 doubles (Marcus Rahauser and Hank Stouffer), but both took their matches to three sets.
Hill said, "Although Hank and Marcus lost in three sets, I was impressed by their aggressive net play. Stouffer was a beast at the net today."
