9 area wrestlers alive for Trojan Wars titles

CASHS Field House was ready to rumble Wednesday for the MyHOUSE Trojan Wars Tournament.

CHAMBERSBURG — CASHS Field House was alive with wrestling on Wednesday, as the MyHOUSE Trojan Wars Tournament, after a year off for the pandemic, brought in a large group of teams from five states.

After prelims and two full rounds of wrestling, nine wrestlers from five area teams have advanced to the quarterfinals and are still chasing one of the coveted first-place Trojan helmets. In addition, five more wrestlers from the area were still in wrestleback competition for medals.

Chambersburg coach Matt Mentzer said, "Overall, I'm happy with how everything is going — we had around 1,100 kids competing today (between varsity, JV and middle school tournaments). The coaches seem to be really happy that we're having the event. We're doing what we can to be as smart as possible."

The Trojans have four wrestlers in the quarterfinals — Rylan Carter at 113, Luke Mentzer at 120, Karl Shindledecker at 126 and Ryder Davenport at 160.

Carter scored a pin in 1:36 with a cradle, Mentzer also pinned his foe in 2:33, and Shindledecker romped to an 11-0 major decision in the second round.

Davenport had a much more difficult time against Tristen Brenneman of Red Lion, but he emerged with an 8-6 victory. Davenport led 2-0 after one period, but was taken down twice and put on his back once in the second; a reversal with 0:08 left enabled him to tie the bout 6-6. Early in the third, Davenport secured a single-leg takedown, then managed to ride Brenneman the rest of the way.

Coach Mentzer said, "He finished off the match with a nice ride in the third — that's not something that's a strength of his. But he stayed out of danger and did a nice job. The other three kids did what they are expected to do. They're veterans and they did well for the first time down at their weights."

Still alive in the wrestlebacks for the Trojans are Zach Sherman (106) and Aiden Hight (189).

Sherman looked to be in good shape of making the quarters when he put Eli Leiphart on his back in the second period for a 3-0 lead. But in the third, Leiphart caught him in a headlock for a takedown and eventual pin.

"Zach had a big opportunity to knock off a good kid," Mentzer said. "He was in good position, but he just needed to be a little better tactically … he'll learn from that."

Waynesboro put three through to the quarterfinals — Jayden Rooney at 113, Bodie Rouzer at 132 and Kaden Rouzer at 145. Rooney scored a pin, Bodie Rouzer won by major and Kaden Rouzer notched a 6-2 verdict.

The other area quarterfinalists are Shippensburg's Diesel Koser at 189 (3-0 win over Derek Davis of Smyrna, Del.) and Mercersburg Academy's Aiden Lorson at 152, who upset the No. 3 seed, Kelton Brunner of Strath Haven, in the second round with a pin in 1:32.

Also still competing in the consolation rounds are Garrett Keener of Greencastle-Antrim (132), Titus Mong of Waynesboro (172) and Luke Hendricks of Mercersburg Academy (285).

Thursday's quarterfinals begin at 10 a.m., followed by the semifinals (1:30) and finals (6). All three rounds will be live streamed on MidPennBroadcasting.com and TheSportsPage.blog.
