Trojans win 7th straight, by 7 over Little Lions. Lady Trojans fall to SC

BOYS BASKETBALL
Chambersburg 75, State College 68: With about 3 1/2 minutes left in the third quarter, the Trojans and Little Lions were tied, 39-39. But a 20-2 run by Chambersburg put it in the driver's seat and it completed a Mid Penn Commonwealth victory at CASHS Field House on Friday night.

Jai'tavius Kelly scored underneath, then Jacob Bassham hit a three to give the Trojans a 44-39 lead. Kelly then blocked a shot, scored on a layup at the other end and completed a three-point play for a 47-39 lead. After a Little Lion hoop, Bassham assisted Kelly underneath for a bucket, and after holding for the last shot, Eli Shearer scored on a drive with 0:05 left.

To open the fourth period, Bassham missed a 3, but got his own rebound, scored and was fouled. He hit the free throw and that gave the Trojans a 54-41 lead. An underhand layup by Bassham and a 3-pointer by Carter Fogal raised the score to 59-41 with just over 6 minutes to play.

State College (5-6, 2-4 MPC), which bombed in 10 threes, could not get closer than the final 7-point margin.

"It was a great game, awesome crowd and a good opponent," Trojan coach Shawn Shreffler said. "Guys on both teams competed very hard. We responded very well coming out of halftime and created some separation."

The game began with Chambersburg scoring the first 6 points, but the Little Lions then put up the next 13 in a row. Late in the first half, a steal by Andon Martin and resulting 3-point play by Shearer, and two free throws by Bassham made it 34-30 in the Trojans' favor at halftime.

Shreffler said, "I thought our close to the second quarter was especially good. I was really happy with how we adjusted throughout the game. And it was great to get quality contributions from a number of guys as we continue to build depth on the team."

Bassham ended up with 24 points — his fourth game with 20 or more — Shearer totaled 16 points, Fogal put in a career-high 15 and Kelly added 12.

For the Little Lions, Braeden Shrewsberry, son of new Penn State men's coach Micah Shrewsberry, fired in 31 points ("He's the real deal," Shreffler said), and Lake Black scored 14 of his 21 in the fourth period.

Chambersburg will host the annual Dunks for Drew showcase on Saturday, with Shippensburg meeting Gettysburg at 6 p.m. and the Trojans taking on Greencastle-Antrim at 7:30. Admission is $5.
