BOYS BASKETBALL
Chambersburg 66, Carlisle 64, OT: Eli Shearer sank two free throws with 0:07 left in overtime to give the Trojans a four-point lead and they hung on to defeat the Thundering Herd in a Mid Penn Commonwealth game Tuesday night.
Jai'tavius Kelly scored six points and had a key block in overtime to help Chambersburg (14-2, 9-1 MPC) to the win.
"We found a way to win against an extremely determined Carlisle team that competed at a very high level," Trojan coach Shawn Shreffler said. "Our division is an absolute grind, which was proven once again tonight against a very talented Carlisle team finally playing at full strength."
The Trojans led 57-55 in regulation and Carlisle (3-11, 1-7 MPC) missed a desperation shot from the baseline that hit off the backboard. The ball bounced free in the lane and several bodies reached for it and somehow Chambersburg was called for a foul with 00.5 of a second left. The Herd's Julian Christopher then made both foul shots to extend the game.
Shreffler said, "I was really proud of how we continued to fight through all the ups and downs that came our way. There are a lot of learning experiences we can take from tonight's contest as we move forward."
Fouls were a huge factor in the game. Chambersburg made only 13 of 21 free throws, and about 8 of those attempts came when Carlisle intended to foul. Meanwhile, the Herd continuously drove the lane and went to the line 36 times and made an impressive 29 of them.
The Trojans broke out to a 29-19 lead in the second quarter with a 9-0 run, but Carlisle answered with a run of eight points. In the fourth quarter, Chambersburg took a52-44 lead with just over five minutes left, but Carlisle was 11-13 at the line the rest of the way to finally tie it up.
In OT, Kelly made two free throws, then, after Andon Martin drew a charge, Kelly scored on a short jumper in the lane to give his team a 61-57 lead they managed to hang on to.
Shearer had 21 points for the Trojans, Kelly scored 18 and Jacob Bassham added 16. For Carlisle, Jaydon Smith led with 17 points, Christopher had 15 and Nick Stiltner, who blocked at least 8 shots, scored 11.
