Unbeaten Gettysburg handles Trojan wrestlers

Gettysburg 57, Chambersburg 16: This season has not exactly worked out as planned for the Trojan wrestling team, and that trend continued Wednesday at CASHS Field House when unbeaten Gettysburg racked up a dominating non-league victory.

Zach Sherman

Chambersburg (4-4) had numerous starters out of the lineup sick (not COVID), and the Warriors (17-0, ranked No. 4 in District 3 Class 3A) have too strong of a lineup to make up for that.

"Of the 13 kids we had penciled in to start the season, only six wrestled tonight," Trojan coach Matt Mentzer said. " It's hard on the morale of the kids — we pretty much just have to fight for individual wins. Some kids who we were trying to develop have been forced to wrestle varsity against some of the top teams in the state."

Three of Chambersburg's top wrestlers (Rylan Carter, Luke Mentzer and Zach Evans) were out Wednesday, as well as Evans' backup, Ethan Faytol.

Coach Mentzer said, "It's been frustrating, because it's not something the kids did wrong. They've just been unable to shake it. They haven't been able to practice, and they need to be ready before they get on the mat again."

The Trojans' points came on a forfeit to Aiden Hight at 189, a pin at 106 by Zach Sherman over Ethan Burgess in 4:54 after Sherman rolled to a 12-0 lead, and a 9-1 major decision at 126 by Karl Shindledecker over Gabriel Pecaitis.

Gettysburg scored pins by Samuel Rodriguez (215), Trevor Gallagher (285), Wyatt Sokol (132), Dalton Redden (138), Jaxon Townsend (145), Logan Newell (152) and Tyler Withers (172) and five of those came in the first period.

The best match of the night came at 160, where Chambersburg's Ryder Davenport gave Jacob Cherry, ranked in the top four in the district, a fight in a 7-5 defeat. Davenport came out on top after a long takedown scramble situation to lead 3-2 after one period and still led 5-4 until Cherry scored a takedown with 12 ticks left in the second. A Cherry escape was the only scoring in the third.

Chambersburg's season doesn't get any easier — it hosts Central Dauphin on Thursday, and Cedar Cliff and State College on Saturday. The Trojans also added a match at Red Land on Feb. 2 and a home meet vs. Ephrata on Feb. 5.

"We need to get these kids ready for sectionals, so we want to give them a couple of matches before that if we can," Mentzer said.
