BOYS BASKETBALL
Lower Dauphin 58, Chambersburg 55: The Falcons' Brady Hofsass hit a long 3-pointer as time expired in the first overtime period to lift LD to an upset win over the Trojans in a non-league game in Hummelstown on Wednesday night.
Chambersburg had tied the game with 10 seconds left on a layup by Jai'tavius Kelly on a feed from Stanley Lozius, and the Falcons called a timeout at 0:08. The ensuing play was defended well by the Trojans and Hofsass — who had not scored to that point — was forced to heave up a prayer and it rattled into the net.
The Trojans' leading scorer, Eli Shearer, did not play in the game due to an injury, Andon Martin fouled out early in OT and Jacob Bassham fouled out with just over 30 seconds left in OT.
"Words can't express how proud I am after watching what our team did tonight," Chambersburg coach Shawn Shreffler said. "Numerous things did not go our way, yet our guys continued to make plays plays over and over again. One example was our execution of an (after time out play) when our fourth points guard (Lozius) dropped a dime for a score that tied it up in OT."
Lower Dauphin (11-10) held a 16-14 lead after a very low-scoring first half, although Bassham helped the Trojans out of an 11-3 hole early. Then Ian Stewart scored 8 consecutive points midway through the third period on a rebound basket and two 3-pointers to give his team a 26-18 advantage. The largest lead of the game was 36-27 with a minute left in the third quarter after a three by Kelly from the top of the circle.
But the Falcons got back in it at the foul line, going 9-for-10 in the fourth period while Chambersburg was 4-for-6. A 3-pointer from the corner by Cody Rosati gave LD a 44-42 lead, but the Trojans tied it up when Bassham followed up a missed dunk by Kelly with a basket at 0:30.
In overtime, Braden Landis (23- points) hit a pair of threes, the second one giving his team a 55-50 lead, but Bassham stuck in a trey from the corner seconds later to make it 55-53. Lozius forced a five-second violation to give Chambersburg possession. On the play that tied it up, Kelly inbounded the ball then went to the basket and Lozius' perfect pass led to the Kelly basket.
Shreffler said, "We were in foul trouble all night long, yet continued to battle back time after time. They just got the last shot and made it."
Bassham scored 23 points for the Trojans, while Kelly totaled 11.
The loss was the second straight for Chambersburg (16-4), which may hurt the Trojans in the District 3 power rankings. They were No. 3 before the game, and face an away game at Central Dauphin on Friday. The top four teams get a first-round bye and host a quarterfinal game in the district playoffs.
