NEW KINGSTOWN — The Mid Penn Conference held its swimming championships this weekend at Cumberland Valley H.S. and the area came up with one individual victory and three other top-3 finishes.
Chambersburg's Derek Estep had the best performance — he captured first place in the boys 100 butterfly with a time of 50.72, beating Owen Brewer of Cumberland Valley (52.39), and also placed second in the 200 freestyle, with his time of 1:42.28, trailing only Hershey's Ben Musante ((1:40.50).
"Derek did an incredible job in both of his individual events — his 200 free and 100 fly times are already fast enough to qualify for states as well as score in the top 16 there," Trojan coach Chad White said.
Brandon Estep placed third in the 100 backstroke with a time of 54.53 and then was seventh in the 200 IM in 1:59.84.
White said, "Brandon achieved two top-8 finishes and is set up nicely to compete in the final heats at the District 3 meet. The boys rebounded very nicely after a disappointing (disqualification) in the 200 medley relay in the first event of the meet. Our time in that was fast and will give us the confidence that we'll be able to compete for a high place at districts."
The Trojans' 400 freestyle relay of Jacob Shifler, Brandon Estep, Joseph Decker and Derek Estep placed fourth in 3:18.57.
White said, "Both Jake and Joseph put together solid swims in the main individual races and should qualify for districts. The 400 free relay was solid and I feel we still have some room to drop our time."
The other top-3 place was turned in by Waynesboro's Eve Phillips in the girls 100 freestyle, with a clocking of 53.06. She was also fourth in the 100 fly (58.67).
For Chambersburg's girls, Layne Rydbom was the highest finisher, with an eighth place in the 200 IM in a time of 2:16.10.
Trojan girls coach Hali Cormany said, "The girls had a great meet. Pretty much all the girls had season-best times and also some personal bests. This is the first meet that all of the girls were healthy and able to compete. I'm extremely proud of their efforts in practice over the last few weeks."
Shippensburg's Jed Ritchie also had two high finishes — fourth in the 500 free (4:52.05, which is a school record, topping Sam Nonemaker) and fifth in the 100 butterfly (53.63).
