Chambersburg's Rylan Carter, top, rides Alex Tennis of Cumberland Valley during the 113-pound final of the Section III Tournament on Saturday. Carter pulled out a 10-9 decision.
MECHANICSBURG — For the first time in any competition this season, Chambersburg had all of its top performers healthy and ready to wrestle on Saturday.
And the results were very positive — the Trojans produced three champions and three runners-up, and captured the team title at the District 3 Class 3A Section III Tournament at Mechanicsburg.
"I don't worry about the team thing much, but the kids do," Chambersburg coach Matt Mentzer said, "and this is the third one in a row we've won. We wrestled with only nine kids, but they all wrestled well, and we thought if the seeds shook out close to where they were, we should be in the running."
The Trojans' three champions were Rylan Carter at 113 with an exciting comeback win, Karl Shindledecker at 126, who won by medical default, and Aiden Hight at 189, who used a late takedown to avenge an earlier defeat to Shippensburg's Diesel Koser, 3-2.
The runners-up were Zach Sherman at 106, Luke Mentzer at 120 and Zach Evans at 215, plus Avery Kuhns took third at 285 and Ryder Davenport was fifth at 160.
Kuhns' 9-2 victory over Ethan Eisner of Red Land for third actually put Chambersburg into first place in the team race. Before his bout, Cumberland Valley led by half a point, but Kuhns' win put the Trojans ahead for good, 168-166.5.
"I had no idea," Kuhns said. "All I knew before my match was that we'd had a small lead a little earlier."

Chambersburg's Aiden Hight hangs on to Diesel Koser of Shippensburg late in his 3-2 victory in the 189-pound final at the Section III tournament Saturday.
Carter's victory over CV's Alex Tennis was the most exciting final of the evening. The two traded points for two periods and Tennis led 6-5 and took bottom to start the third. He quickly escaped, then scored a takedown to grab a 9-5 lead. With the clock winding down inside 30 seconds, it did not look good for Carter.
But as Mentzer called out from the corner for him to hit a fireman's carry, that's exactly what Carter did. It gave him a takedown and he pulled Tennis down long enough to earn two back points for a 10-9 lead. The final 12 seconds were a flurry of rolls and spins, but Carter held on for the win.
"I didn't hear coach yell that, but I was thinking it anyway," Carter said of the fireman's. "I had to take it and I saw it was there, and when I got it I knew I had to put him on his back. Those last few seconds were tough — he's pretty strong."
Mentzer said, "Tennis had an underhook on that side and I could see it might work. Rylan hit it and executed it. That kid has sacrificed to get to his weight, so it was nice to see him get his reward."
Shindledecker was favored to win at 126 over Trentin Walker of Carlisle, but Walker has been bothered by an injury and he and his coaches decided not to chance it. So Shindledecker won by medical default.
Koser had defeated Hight 3-1 in sudden victory in the semifinals of the Carlisle tournament earlier in the season. This one was just as tight, with the two tied 1-1 heading into the last minute of regulation. Hight had pushed the pace and gotten a stalling warning on Koser, and he broke through for the go-ahead takedown at the edge of the mat with 0:55 left. He rode Koser until an escape with just 6 ticks left and won 3-2.
"I learned from the last time that I needed to constantly attack," Hight said. "I knew I was at the edge on that takedown, so I had to get to both of his legs (before he went out)."
Mentzer said, "Aiden stayed persistent for six minutes. He kept the pressure on him and resulted in that stalling call that I think forced Koser's hand a little. Then (Aiden) cashed in on the good position he had for that takedown."
Sherman gave up a pair of scramble takedowns to CV's Phil Montes in the 106 final on shots he initiated, putting him behind 4-0 after two periods in a 7-2 defeat. Luke Mentzer could not find a way to score against Rocco Fratelli of Northern, who had two takedowns and a reversal and allowed only a late escape in a 6-1 victory at 120. At in the 215 final, CD East's Travis Armstrong caught Evans in a brutal cradle from neutral and used it for a pin in 35 seconds.
"(Sherman) was in on three good leg attacks, but he has to finish those shots," Mentzer said. "Luke has to find a way to score at the end of the periods."
The other area finalist was Shippensburg's unbeaten Dom Frontino at 152. He found himself in a strategic battle with Gabe Belga of Cumberland Valley with the score tied 1-1 deep into the final period. But Frontino caught Belga a little off-balance and was able to spin behind for a takedown at the edge of the mat with 0:13 left. A harmless escape made the final score 3-2.
The top four finishers at each weight class qualified for the District 3 Championships on Friday and Saturday at Spring Grove H.S. Chambersburg advances seven wrestlers and Shippensburg has three moving on, including John Gleason, fourth at 172.
