Chambersburg roundup: Softball (W) and baseball (L) split 3-0 games with CD

SOFTBALL
Chambersburg 3, Central Dauphin 0: Kylee Miller continued her strong pitching and led the Trojans to a big Mid Penn Commonwealth victory over the rival Rams on Saturday morning on the road.

Sophie Fetterhoff

Miller went the distance and allowed only two hits. She did walk five batters, but fanned nine.

"Kylee continued her impressive start and was the difference today," Chambersburg coach Chris Skultety said. "She hasn't allowed a run this year in two scrimmages and two games. She kept them off balance and her walks didn't hurt her today. The defense was stellar and a vital reason we got out of a bases-loaded jam with one out in the second inning."

The Trojans (2-0, 2-0 MPC) managed only seven hits, including a 3-for-4 day by Hannah Runk and a 2-for-3 effort by Sophie Fetterhoff.

In the top of the fourth, Carly Benedict smoked a one-out triple and the next batter, Saleen Null, brought her home with a base hit.

The 1-0 score remained the same until the top of the seventh. Fetterhoff singled with one out, and an out later, Runk also singled, moving Fetterhoff to third. Runk swiped second base, and then an error by Central Dauphin on a ball hit by Samantha Paetow allowed both runners to cross the plate.

Skultety said, "We are struggling a bit at the plate right now, but good teams win in different ways and that's what we did today. The bats will come around, and when they do I wouldn't want to be the opposing team."

Dru Bowling

BASEBALL
Central Dauphin 3, Chambersburg 0: The Trojans had a rough time putting the bat to the ball on Saturday morning and dropped a shutout loss to the Rams in a Mid Penn Commonwealth game at Greene Township Park.

Chambersburg (1-2, 0-2 MPC) mustered only two hits — singles by Dru Bowling and Carter Fogal — and struck out a total of 16 times. Only once did a runner reach second base.

CD's Nate Payne went six innings and fanned 13, and Nick Keane ended the game with three punchouts in the seventh.

"This is the kind of thing we were afraid of," Trojan coach Scott Folmar said. "Their pitcher was throwing strikes with all of his pitches. But we made it pretty easy for their defense — we put no pressure on them all day."

Tegan Kuhns pitched the first four innings for Chambersburg, allowing two hits and three walks while striking out six. In the top of the first, the Rams scored on a walk to the leadoff batter and a couple of outs later, a swing-and-miss third strike was muffed by the catcher and the runner came home.

Still 1-0 in the seventh, the Rams scored twice off reliever Wyatt Kissel, with Nate Dorris driving in both runs.
