FAYETTEVILLE — As soon as Chambersburg came to the plate in the bottom of the first inning, the hitting started.
And it didn't let up until the Trojans had taken a 17-2 Mid Penn Commonwealth softball victory over Cedar Cliff on Tuesday afternoon at Norlo Park.
Chambersburg (5-0, 4-0 MPC) rapped out 19 hits, with only one or two not hit hard. And that included a trio of two-run home runs. The Trojans scored five runs in the first, six more in the second and three each in the third and fourth to wrap up the win in four innings.
"That was fun," Chambersburg coach Chris Skultety said. "The bats are starting to come around and we had a couple of girls hit their first home runs. That's kind of neat."
Skultety's freshman daughter, Karley Skultety, had herself a day, doing 4-for-4 and driving in four runs. In her first at bat, she picked on a pitch by Jenna Weaver and hit a high fly ball to left-center for her first home run. She also singled in the final run with two outs in the fourth to end the game via the 15-run rule.
Hannah Runk belted a two-run homer in the second inning to almost the exact some spot as Skultety's. And in the third, pinch-hitter Riley Lilley really got hold of one, sending it deep down the left field line for a two-run shot.
The Trojans also counted doubles by Alyssa Brechbill and Sam Paetow among their hits. Kenzie Boyd was 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.
How good of a day for hitting was it for the Trojans? Coach Skultety sent six batters to the plate in pinch-hitting roles and four got base hits.
"Our young kids are starting to hit," Skultety said. "It's nice to be able to push the buttons and have them come in and get hits. It was another good team win today. I liked our emotion and I liked the way they ran the bases today."
Saleen Null started and pitched three innings. Although she went to three-ball counts on the first three batters, she ended up allowing only one hit and one unearned run.
Skultety said, "It was nice to give Kylee (Miller) a break. Saleen wasn't sharp early; she just needs more outings."
