Trojan pin parade dismantles Mechanicsburg, 63-12

CHAMBERSBURG — Pinning — and doing it quickly — became contagious for the Chambersburg wrestling team Wednesday night.

Zethan Sleighter

The Trojans, competing at home for the first time this season, attacked Mechanicsburg from the get-go and posted a 63-12 non-league victory over the Wildcats at CASHS Field House.

Chambersburg (5-4) scored seven pins and added two forfeits in the first nine bouts, and of those pins, all but one came in the first period. Mechanicsburg did not score an individual point until the fifth bout of the night and did not record a takedown until the 10th bout, as the Trojans broke out to a 58-0 lead.

"They're getting better," Chambersburg coach Matt Mentzer said of his team. "Most of the kids did what was expected of them — you go out and you're probably better than your opponent and you wrestle confidently. We scored points and we secured falls."

Zethan Sleighter led off the match at 152 pounds with a pin in 41 seconds for the Trojans, gaining his first win of the season.

What quickly followed were pins by Ivan Mixell (160), Noah Valentine (172), Jaccob Stoner (189), Aiden Hight (215), Frank Barrientos (285), forfeits to Cody Seabolt (107) and Ben Hoover (114) and a final stick by Zach Sherman (121).

In the final four bouts, Chambersburg got a 20-6 major decision by Gabe Nolan over James Spargo at 127, and a 17-1 technical fall t 145 by Tyler Frye.

In between, the Wildcats (0-2) notched pins from Cole Sweitzer at 133 and Abel Brunk at 139.

Mentzer said, "This is why we wrestle the kind of schedule we do. We've already had a bunch of tough matches where you're out there fighting for your life. On a night like this, you have a little advantage, and you go with it. That's why we don't have an easy schedule."

NOTES: Mechanicsburg is in its second season under former Cumberland Valley coach Dave Heckard, who is attempting a total rebuild of the program … The Trojans were missing two starters from their lineup … Chambersburg travels to CV on Thursday for a big Mid Penn Commonwealth match, and will likely not be at full strength for that one, either.
