CHAMBERSBURG — The Chambersburg wrestling team used a decided advantage in takedowns, a strong start and a good finish to end a four-match losing skid on Wednesday night at CASHS Field House.
The Trojans came up with 21 takedowns to 7 for Shippensburg and defeated the Greyhounds 47-19 in a non-league match.
"Our guys have to do a better job," Chambersburg coach Matt Mentzer said. "I felt a couple of guys were going through the motions. We have to keep getting better, because we are not where we expected to be right now."
The Trojans (6-8) rolled to a 16-0 lead, then Shippensburg (2-6) fought back to make it a 23-16 deficit. But Chambersburg notched two pins and a forfeit to clinch the victory.
Ashton Romberger (133), Jaccob Stoner (189) and Kaden Mangus (215) scored pins for Chambersburg, while Caleb Swartz (127) and Tyler Frye (145) racked up major decisions. Noah Valentine (160) won by decision and Cody Seabolt (114), Zach Sherman (121) and Aiden Hight (285) took forfeit wins.
The points were flying in Swartz's 20-10 win over Richard Elliott. Swartz led 8-3 after two periods, then Elliott escaped and took Swartz down to his back to momentarily tie it up, but Swartz rolled through to get a reversal and three nearfall points and stayed ahead from there on.
There were 19 total points scored in the third period alone.
For the Hounds, Ayden Estep (139) and Eddie Alcantara (152) notched pins, John Gleason took an 11-0 major decision at 172 and Abe Luffy (107) earned a decision.
Estep trailed Logan Mickey 7-2 early in the second period after being taken down three times. But Estep nailed a double-leg takedown to make it 7-4, escaped to open the third, then took Mickey down to his back and decked him in 5:02.
Luffy and the Trojans' Ben Hoover locked up in a tight affair at 107. Both had chances for a takedown in the first, but neither could finish. Luffy showed a strong ride in the second to keep it scoreless, then escaped Hoover's clutches with 51 seconds to go for a 1-0 win.
Mentzer said, "Ship is getting better — we knew they would be with (coach) Josh (Barrick) there. You can see improvement in the middle school and high school teams."
