MECHANICSBURG — Once the sectional tournaments roll around in wrestling, the emphasis switches from the team to the individual.
But that doesn't mean the team feeling goes away. In fact, Chambersburg has found a way to make the individuals stronger by doing well in the team standings.
It happened again Saturday in the District 3 Section III Tournament at Mechanicsburg H.S. The Trojans advanced eight wrestlers into next weekend's District 3 championships, while at the same time managed to win their fourth sectional team title in the last five years.
"We don't really worry about the team thing — we just want our guys to do well and that will take care of itself," Chambersburg coach Matt Mentzer said. "And our guys performed very well today. We had a whole bunch of kids who just kept on working, stayed in matches and got some good results."
Of the 11 Trojans in the tournament, six finished higher than their seed, three were the same as their seed and only one finished lower than his seed.
Chambersburg was also very good in the blood round — the round of consolations that determines which two kids will qualify for districts and wrestle for third place — the Trojans went 5-2 in that round. Chambersburg also came up with 16 pins for the day.
"A bunch of our kids in the blood round had no real credentials and wrestled kids with better records, but they came through," Mentzer said. "It was a hard day — some kids wrestled five matches with little break in between — but they wrestled really tough today."
Zach Sherman (121) and Aiden Hight (215) — both seeded No. 1 — captured sectional titles.
Ashton Romberger was a runner-up at 133; he had a No. 3 seed.
The other Chambersburg district qualifiers included Cody Seabolt at 107 (seeded 6th, placed 4th); Noah Valentine at 160 (seeded 6th, placed 3rd); Isaiah Tasker at 172 (seeded 6th, placed 4th); Jaccob Stoner at 189 (seeded 4th, took 4th) and Frank Barrientos at 285 (seeded 5th, placed 3rd).
In addition, Caleb Swartz was fifth at 127 (seeded 8th) and Tyler Frye was fifth at 145 (seeded No. 4).
Hight's pin in 2:34 in the 215-pound final, came about the same time that Barrientos and Swartz were racking up pins, and those points may have secured the team title.
"I knew we were close (in the team standings), so I felt like I had to go for (the pin)," Hight said. "When our team is doing really well, everybody else gets hyped and makes us want to wrestle better."
For the other Franklin County teams, Shippensburg qualified only two for districts, but both were sectional champions — Eddie Alcantara at 152 and John Gleason at 172. James Buchanan and Greencastle-Antrim did not advance any wrestlers.
Sherman was the Trojans' first champion and it took a burst of energy in overtime to overcome Drew Scherer of Boiling Springs, 4-2.
The 121 bout was tied 1-1 after regulation and sudden victory. Scherer chose down in the first tiebreaker and escaped with just 4 seconds left. Then Sherman was down and got an escape at 0:13. Scherer then tried a wild shot and Sherman countered for a clinching two points with 1 second left.
"I knew I had to make something happen when I started down," Sherman said. "When I got out, he knew he had to try to score, because I would have chosen down and gotten out (in the ultimate tiebreaker).
"That's the fifth time we've wrestled, and I'm up 4-1, but the one he won was for a trip to states last year, so I needed this one. We're pretty familiar with each other's style, so I was expecting a (low-scoring) match."
Hight spun behind for a takedown on an ill-timed shot by Miller in the first period. In the second, he escaped, took Miller down again after Miller had Hight's back exposed for several seconds with no control, then barred him up to turn him for the fall.
"My philosophy is, if I see something, I'll try for it," said Hight, who also racked up his 100th career victory. "I wasn't in the best position there, but it worked out."
Romberger gave up takedowns in the first and third periods and a reversal in the second in a 6-0 defeat to Cumberland Valley's Connor Killion.
For Shippensburg, Alcantara had a spectacular ending for his win at 152. Tied 5-5 with Cedar Cliff's Josh Weaver entering overtime after a stalling call at 0:19 tied the bout, the two went through a series of rolls, re-rolls, twists and turns before Alcantara emerged on top for the winning takedown.
Both appeared to have the winning points twice, only to have their opponent spin free. It was a great piece of officiating to let the situation play out, too.
At 172, Gleason put on a defensive clinic, not allowing a point all day. He led 2-0 in his first bout and then he pinned his foe. He won 5-0 in the semifinals and took a 4-0 win over Carlisle's Steffon Urban in the final.
Gleason took Urban down in the first period. Urban chose neutral for period No. 2, but was taken down again by Gleason, and in the third, Gleason rode him out.
WAYNESBORO QUALIFIES 5: In the District 3 Section IV Tournament at South Western H.S. on Saturday, Waynesboro placed 7th as a team and advanced 5 wrestlers to next weekend's District 3 tournament.
Caden Shockey was the Indians' lone finalist. He was edged 3-2 by Aiden Grim of Dallastown at 189 pounds.
Jayden Rooney (139) placed third, while Steven Howard (121), Calvin Myers (145) and Titus Mong (172) each placed fourth for 'Boro.
Also, Cort Myers was fifth at 285 and Clayton Costello took 6th at 160.
Gettysburg won the team title with 237 points, followed by Central York. The Indians scored 101 points.
