SPRING GROVE — He didn't get to hit one of his big throws, but that won't bother Chambersburg senior Aiden Hight too much.
And it certainly won't tarnish the gold medal Hight captured Saturday afternoon at Spring Grove H.S. by winning the 215-pound weight class at the District 3 Class 3A Championships.
Hight rolled to an 11-7 victory over Ryan McMillan of Wilson on the strength of five takedowns, three of which were a simple snap and spin.
"I've learned to use heavy hands to move guys around and create angles for me," Hight said. "If I see a throw, I'll take it, but it wasn't there (in this match)."
Hight led 4-1 after two snap takedowns in the first period, but McMillan rolled through from bottom and scored a reversal and two quick back points to take a 5-4 lead after one period.
No matter.
Hight escaped, took McMillan down with a slick duck-under and led 7-5 after two. In the third, he added another snap and then a single-leg takedown for the final margin.
Trojan coach Matt Mentzer said, "He controlled the match on his feet and got the takedowns he needed to get. He dominated that kid except for that one move, which made it seem a little closer than it was."
Hight, a North Dakota State commit, had finished as a district runner-up as a sophomore and was fourth last year.
"This feels a lot better this time," he said.
Hight will be the only wrestler from Franklin County to qualify for the PIAA State Tournament.
The third round of consolations on Saturday morning wiped out five of six area wrestlers, with only Chambersburg's Ashton Romberger able to grab a victory. He decisioned Luke Morley of Conestoga Valley 6-2. Morley's reversal early in the third got him to within 3-2, but Romberger escaped with 40 seconds left and scored a clinching takedown at 0:21.
In the round to qualify for states, Romberger was edged 2-1 by Mason Harvey of Red Lion. Harvey scored his points on a roll through for a reversal early in the third, after he rode Romberger the entire second period.
He then wrestled Connor Killion of Cumberland Valley for 5th place and was defeated 7-4. A throw from his feet for a takedown and back points gave Romberger a 4-2 lead in the third, but Killion reversed him to his back for 5 points.
At 172, the Trojans' Isaiah Tasker escaped with one second left in the second period to take a 5-4 lead on Mason Bucks of Palmyra in the third round, but a takedown with 25 seconds left in the third clinched it, 7-5, for Bucks.
Waynesboro's Jayden Rooney also had a tough defeat, falling 3-1 in sudden victory to Ian Longenberger of Boiling Springs, who countered for the winning two points.
NOTES: The PIAA Tournament is March 7-9 at the Giant Center … Wilson won the team title with 129.5 points to beat Central Dauphin (124) … Chambersburg finished 12th.
