Trojans fall 1-0 to Warwick in 3rd-place game

FAYETTEVILLE — Chambersburg could not solve Warwick pitcher Kate Shaak, did not take advantage of the opportunities it did have and got nothing positive out of the few balls that were hit hard.

All that resulted in the Trojans' first shutout loss of the season, 1-0 to the Warriors, in the District 3 Class 6A third-place softball game at Norlo Park on Thursday afternoon.

"I don't know what we've done to the softball gods," Chambersburg coach Chris Skultety said.

The Trojans (18-5) will open PIAA State Tournament play with an away game Monday against the District 1 champion, either Downingtown West or Quakertown. Warwick (19-5) will play the District 12 champion.

Shaak was not overpowering, with only three strikeouts, but she induced 14 pop-ups or fly balls for outs, scattered five hits and two walks and was toughest when Chambersburg threatened.

"We didn't make any adjustments at the plate," Skultety said. "She wasn't throwing any changeups and her ball wasn't moving much, but we kept popping up her riseball. We just weren't barreling it up."

The final play of the game summed up the Trojans' frustration. With two outs, Lauren Allison bunted for a hit for the second time. Bree Paetow then crushed a 3-1 pitch on a line right back at Shaak. She was able to deflect it off her glove and shortstop Katie Heisey gloved it and stepped on second base to force Allison.

It wasn't the only time the Warriors' defense shone. Centerfielder Everson Overly raced in to make a catch just off the ground and Heisey roamed into leftfield to make a circus catch in full stretch mode.

Chambersburg had two runners reach third and another get to second, but Shaak was up to the task.

Meanwhile, Kori Leedy pitched one of her best games of the season for the Trojans. She twirled a five-hitter, with no walks and four strikeouts.

"She pitched well, and congrats to her for her 100th career strikeout," Skultety said.

Warwick's only run came in the sixth. Kenzie Ellis led off with a hot shot to third that Saleen Null could only deflect, and Ellis ended up on second. She moved to third when Heisey grounded out to first base and scored when Bella Smithson grounded out to shortstop.

Skultety said, "We seemed to have a lot of energy in warmups, but once we didn't score early, we seemed to go flat. They didn't seem too up, either — third place is a hard game to play."

NOTES: Trojan catcher Sam Paetow threw out two runners — one caught off base at second and the other trying to steal second … Paetow also hit an absolute moon shot in the first inning, but it was hit just foul down the leftfield line.
