CV halts Trojans comeback attempt

Cumberland Velley 3, Chambersburg 2: The Eagles prevailed in the fifth set to thwart an impressive comeback attempt by the Trojans in a Mid Penn Commonwealth barnburner Tuesday night in New Kingstown.

CV slipped into a 2-0 lead with wins in the first two games, 25-23 and 25-19. But Chambersburg came back to win the next two, 25-18 and 25-16, and grab momentum. But the Eagles turned it around and took the fifth set, 15-8.

"This was a great, hard-fought match between two quality teams," Trojan coach Ty Frelin said. "Neither team gave up."

Alayna Jones had a monster night for Chambersburg (1-1, 0-1 MPC), totaling 20 service points, 20 kills and 20 digs. Ava Zeigler posted 44 assists, 8 points and 15 digs.

Marah Lehman led in kills with 21, and also had 6 points. Karley Skultety led in digs with 26. Kacey Moser recorded 2 blocks, Kaylie Stull had 6 points and Cami Bender contributed 15 digs.

Frelin said, "We fought hard to win the third and fourth sets, but then made too many mistakes in the fifth. We proved to ourselves that we can compete with anyone."
