Chambersburg roundup: X-C teams place high at PTXC, Girls Soccer wins, Boys Soccer splits at YS Kickoff Classic

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY
Trojans finish 3rd: Chambersburg competed in the PennTrackX-C Invitational at Kutztown University on Saturday and placed third in a tough Varsity Gold division.

Liam Kirkpatrick

Council Rock North, the defending PIAA champion, took first with 106 points, defending New York state champion Monroe-Woodbury was second with 113 and the Trojans were next with 121 points.

"We won this last year and were third this year, but the competition was a lot better this year," Chambersburg coach John Ambrosio said. "We beat Manheim Township, who is No. 4, although they didn't have their No. 1 guy."

Liam Kirkpatrick placed 11th for the Trojans in a time of 16:27.4, followed by Aiden Alleman in 15th in 16:33.5, Julian Clark in 19th in 16:43.4, Kaden Rife was 26th in 16:57.9 and Sam Kinton was 50th in 17:45.6.

Ambrosio said, "We had four guys break 17 minutes, even though the course is not that fast. Most of the guys who ran here last year were faster this time. Our top four can really pack it up and run well together. Sam Kinton, our No. 5 scorer today, picked up something like 20 places in the final mile."

Other runners for the Trojans were Boston Vincenti (55th, 17:53.2) and Dominic Onomastico (68th, 18:12.9).

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY
4th place won by Trojans: Chambersburg fared well in a strong field at the PennTrackXC Invitational at Kutztown University on Saturday.

Madelyn Koons

The Trojans placed fourth in the Varsity Gold race with behind Great Valley (86), Manheim Township (89) and Downingtown East (118).

Chambersburg coach Chris Monheim said, "We had a nice day and fared well in a small, but very competitive field. Of the 12 teams in our race, five were in the top 20 in the state (the Trojans are No. 18). We were able to knock off two teams ranked ahead of us."

Mady Koons placed 10th for Chambersburg in a time of 20:39.8, while Brook Boone was 19th in 21:06.2. The other scorers were Dana Rosenberry (27th in 21:31.3), Natalie Quinn (29th in 21:46.6) and Kaylie Savage (37th in 22:12.3), while Raegan Hepner (48th, 22:49.0) and Fernanda Orihuela (50th, 23:03.7) also competed.

"Mady and Brook worked hard in the second half of the race to earn top-20 medals," Monheim said, "and Dana, Natalie and Kaylie were pretty closely grouped, which kept the point total down. Addi Williams was third in the JV race and had our team's seventh best time."

Katy Weller

GIRLS SOCCER
Chambersburg 5, State College 0: The Trojans earned their first win of the young season by crushing State College in a Mid Penn Commonwealth game Saturday at Trojan Stadium.

In the first half Malia Cramer hit a shot from distance to put Chambersburg (1-2-1, 1-2-1 MPC) up 1-0, and it was 2-0 very shortly when the Little Lions put in an own goal. Kadence Decker made it 3-0 by the half, tucking in a shot from around the 6.

"We didn't have quite the control in the second half we would have liked," Trojan coach Paul Unruh said. "We ended up tamping down ay momentum State College was building in the second half. But we will need to be more focused as we enter a week in which we play four games."

The fourth goal came with 10 minutes left when Katy Weller lobbed a shot from about 25 yards out over the goalkeeper's head, and Cramer closed it out with a penalty kick goal.

BOYS SOCCER
Chambersburg goes 1-1: The Trojans hit the road Saturday to play in a tournament at York Suburban, and fell 1-0 to the host Trojans, then took third place by beating Red Land 2-0.

Colton Hunsecker

Chambersburg out-shot York Suburban 8-7 and had more corner kicks (5-4).

Trojan coach Corey Grove said, "You need to score goals to win soccer games and we aren't doing it. It should have been a game we easily took care of."

Chambersburg (1-4-1) came back to shut out the Patriots and Colton Hunsecker pounded in both goals. Nathaniel Folk had one assist.

Grove said, "Happy to get the first win. The boys played a bit more free in the second game and it took some pressure off of themselves. Hopefully this will get some momentum going into next week.

"Hunsecker had a great performance, and his second goal was an excellent individual effort. Center defensive midfielders Elvis Lopez and Edwin Ramirez also played a solid game."
