Chambersburg roundup: Trojans take down Altoona in volleyball

Riley Evans

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Chambersburg 3, Altoona 1: In the first of four matches this week, the Trojans took care of Altoona in a Mid Penn Commonwealth match at CASHS Field House on Monday evening, with game scores of 25-17, 25-22, 23-25 and 25-16.

"It was a great way to start a busy week," Chambersburg coach Ty Frelin said. "We played really well tonight as a team. When you pass well out of serve receive, you can do nice things offensively — that's what we did tonight. We controlled the net and served tough."

Serve leaders were Riley Evans (13 points, 2 aces), Karley Skultety (11, 3), Cami Bender (8, 4) and Ava Zeigler (8, 3).

Evans was strong at the net, too, with 9 kills and 3 blocks. Nizaya Hawkins blocked 3 balls and Marah Lehman (13) and Alayna Jones (9) were kills leaders.

Zeigler contributed 36 assists, Skultety had 23 digs and Jones added 15.

GIRLS SOCCER
Chambersburg 1, Washington, W.Va. 1: The Trojans played their best game of the season and came home with a tie in a non-league contest against the Patriots in Shepherdstown on Monday evening.

Bree Paetow

"They were a high quality opponent, so we had to stay sharp defensively," Chambersburg coach Paul Unruh said.

Washington scored its goal 27 minutes in when a long punt from the keeper resulted in a breakaway and a goal.

Unruh said, "I like the way we responded was excellent — we provided a constant threat going forward, pushing wave after wave of attacking sequences. Eventually, the pressure paid off when Lilah Upham played a ball to Bree Paetow's feet and she hit a 20-yard rocket over the keeper.

"In the last 15 minutes we continued to create high-percentage chances, but unfortunately no end product. It was the first game where our intensity steadily increased over the 80 minutes and it was by far our best performance of the season."

The Trojans are 1-2-2.
