Johnathan Arevalo and Malia Cramer each had that game-winning goal feeling Saturday afternoon.
Chambersburg and Greencastle-Antrim matched up in non-league soccer games, with the boys playing at Trojan Stadium and the girls at Kaley Field. In both cases, the Trojans pulled out wins in overtime.
In the boys game, early in the first overtime period, Arevalo saw the G-A goalkeeper off his line and decided to take a shot. The ball traveled around 40 yards and snuck in over his head for the deciding goal.
"I couldn't be happier for Johnathan to score his first varsity goal in that way," Chambersburg coach Corey Grove said. "He's a senior captain, who has been a big part of our team's success the past few years."
The Trojans (3-5-1), who have won three of their last four games, scored in the first half when Brandon Arana scored his first varsity goal, unassisted. Greencastle (2-6) evened the count in the second half when Cooper Noblit scored his seventh goal of the season, unassisted.
Blue Devils coach Tim Carey said, "Both teams had several great looks at goals, with each team hitting the post, and possession was about even. The boys are really close now and if we continue to play like this, no one should beat us."
Shots were 12-9 in Chambersburg's favor and corner kicks were 6-2. Tyson Shanholtz made 5 saves for the Trojans and Joe Lofton had 3 for G-A.
Grove said, "With three key starters sidelined with injuries, we've been turning to some younger JV guys to step up. Arana gave us a spark in a crucial time of the game with his goal."
In the topsy-turvy girls game, Greencastle (5-2-1) held a one-goal lead on three separate occasions — 1-0, 2-1, 3-2 — but all three times, the Trojans (3-3-2) rallied to tie the game. With about 5 minutes to go in regulation and G-A holding a 3-2 lead, Katy Weller took a free kick for Chambersburg.
Her shot ticked off the crossbar and Bree Paetow headed the loose ball into the net to send the game to overtime.
On the winning goal, Kacey Wise fed Cramer with a pass and Cramer pounded the ball into the net to end the game.
"We should not have lost this game," Greencastle coach Jamie Coy said. "We've been dealing with some injuries and sickness this week, so today was a tough break. Soccer is a beautiful game, but some days are a roller-coaster of emotions. That was today."
Trojan coach Paul Unruh said, "Both of our outside backs had incredible games, with Marley Onomastico and Autumn McNew playing with energy and grit. Defensive mid Zamira Jani also played a highly intelligent game in terms of her positioning.
"It was fantastic to watch our team show the desire they did to push hard for the win at the end."
For Greencastle, Braelyn Cordell scored both goals in the first half, one assisted by Hailey Baker and the other by Natalie Hanks, and she now has 11 goals for the season. In the second half, Shaina Overcash's unassisted tally made it 3-2. Keeper Lexi Nelson made 13 saves.
Earlier for Chambersburg, Cramer scored after a pass from Kadence Decker, and Decker put one in the net with the assist going to Paetow.
