Chambersburg roundup: Softball team hands Ship 8-1 defeat

SOFTBALL
Chambersburg 8, Shippensburg 1: Bree Paetow and Addison Gsell had big days at the plate to help the Trojans take a non-league victory over the Greyhounds at Ship on Friday afternoon.

Addison Gsell

Paetow went 3-for-4 with 3 stolen bases for Chambersburg (2-2), and her second was the junior's 100th hit of her career. She also has over 70 career steals.

Gsell belted a pair of home runs, a solo shot in the third inning and a 3-run blast in the fifth.

"I guess she got out of her mini slump," Trojan coach Chris Skultety said of Gsell. "Some of our hitters had consistent at-bat, like Malia Cramer (2 hits), but we still need to get more people getting hits for us."

Kori Leedy pitched the first 4 innings to gain the victory, giving up only 1 hit and a run. Issie Slimmer pitched 2 innings and Sanay Jones hurled the final inning.

Skultety said, "I was very pleased with our defense today. We made every play and had no errors. Kori pitched well, giving up the hit on an 0-2 changeup."

BASEBALL
Shippensburg 3, Chambersburg 1: Greyhound pitchers Brady Maciejewski and Braiden Carroll held the Trojans to just 2 hits Friday afternoon in a non-league game Friday afternoon at Greene Township Park.

Wyatt Martin

Maciejewski pitched the first 3 hitless innings, with 1 walk and 5 strikeouts, and Carroll threw 4 innings, giving up 1 earned run, 2 hits and 3 walks, with 3 Ks.

Chambersburg (1-4) scored its run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Ryne Mills led off with a walk and Wyatt Martin singled him to second base. Brady Truett then poked a base hit and Mills raced home. But with the tying runs on base, Carroll ended the rally with a strikeout and a pop-up.

The Trojans used 4 pitchers — Martin, Pyne and Harrison Benedict each pitched 2 innings and Kam Mauriello threw one. Pyne was charged with the defeat. The foursome combined to give up 4 hits, 8 walks and had 9 strikeouts.

For Ship (1-4). Andrew Mowery led off with a walk in the fourth and eventually scored on an error. In the fifth, he came up with an RBI single, while the other run scored on an error.
