BOYS TRACK & FIELD
Chambersburg 74, State College 70: The Trojans dominated the track events and the Little Lions did likewise in the field events, but it added up to a narrow Chambersburg victory in a rainy Mid Penn Commonwealth meet Thursday afternoon at Trojan Stadium.
"I told our guys before the meet that we had to focus on what we could control in these uncomfortable conditions and just go compete," Trojan coach Jim Boyer said. "And that's exactly what they did, grabbing a lot of close points to capture the win."
Chambersburg (3-1, 3-1 MPC) outscored State College 59-25 in track events to make up for a 47-15 deficit in the field.
Jon Dawe picked up a pair of victories for the Trojans, winning the 110 hurdles in 16.5 and the 300 hurdles in 42.6.
The distance runners piled up a lot of points, sweeping the 1600 and 3200. Kaden Rife won the 1600 (4:36.4), Julian Clark took the 3200 (9:51.9) and Aiden Alleman was first in the 800 (2:02.1).
Boyer said, "This was one of those meets that our coaches and team knew early on that every point would count."
Cobe Penick captured the 400 in 57.8 and Luke Mertz was the lone field winner, placing first in the pole vault with a height of 11-0.
The 4 x 800 team of Rife, Liam Kirkpatrick, Boston Vincenti and Alleman won in 8:27.2, and the 4 x 400 team of Dawe, Alleman, Cole Lehman and Penick won in 3:39.7.
In the 100, Chambersburg's Antonio Harrison and SC's Jesse Myers (3rd in PIAA last year) both timed in 10.7, with Myers taking first.
GIRLS TRACK & FIELD
State College 106, Chambersburg 44: The Little Lions won 13 of the events to 5 for the Trojans and collected a Mid Penn Commonwealth victory at Trojan Stadium on Thursday afternoon.
"State College has an incredible girls team and tons of depth," Chambersburg coach Chris Monheim said. "Despite the loss, I was very pleased and proud of the girls' efforts They work hard and are improving."
The Trojans (2-2, 2-2 MPC) picked up two wins in the field. Cami Bender won the javelin with a toss of 94-9, while Alaina Morris placed first in the pole vault at a height of 8-6.
On the track, Marlee Jackson ran first in the 100 hurdles in 16.5, Natalie Quinn won the 1600 in 5:34.8 and Maggie Holtry hit the line first in the 400 in a time of 1:03.5, just nipping a State College runner who finished in 1:03.8.
Jackson nearly won the 300 hurdles, but her time missed by just .4 of a second. The 4 x 800 relay team of Quinn, Kaylie Savage, Brook Boone and Mady Koons was second in 10:15.35 to SC's 10:15.30, and the 4 x 100 team of Jaxin Frazer, Addy Zimmerman, Mimi Sistrunk and Addy Brubaker finished just .5 behind the Little Lions.
Monheim said, "Quinn had a nice day with her win and ran a good relay leg. Koons ran a gutsy anchor leg on the 4 x 800 and lost by just inches at the line with a great effort. Jackson looked strong in both hurdles races and Holtry won a close 400 race."
GIRLS LACROSSE
Chambersburg 10, Mechanicsburg 8: The Trojans overcame an early deficit to beat the Wildcats for the first time since 2018 on Thursday night at Trojan Stadium in a Mid Penn Commonwealth clash.
"Defense was again the difference," Chambersburg coach Shane Henry said. "On two occasions we were playing a man down and our defense stood tall and locked it down. I thought Brooke Mickey and Maryn Henry were true leaders on defense."
Brynn Sekel scored 3 goals and had an assist, plus 3 caused turnovers, 4 groundballs and 7 draw controls. Reagan Barrett also stacked up 3 goals, 3 turnovers, 2 ground balls and 5 draws.
Also for the Trojans (4-4, 4-4 MPC), McKenna Myers scored twice, caused a turnover and had 2 groundballs, Ellie Sarvis had a goal and an assist and Adele Henry scored a goal and added 2 groundballs. Reese Heverley made 11 saves in goal.
Coach Henry said, "It was nice to see McKenna and Ellie score tonight — they played at a whole different level.
"We came out a little sluggish and allowed them to lead 3-1 after one quarter. But we were able to settle into our offense and that's when things started turning around. These ladies are fighters and gave me everything they had for 48 minutes. They showed a lot of grit and determination."
BOYS LACROSSE
Mechanicsburg 14, Chambersburg 6: The Trojans ran into a talented Wildcat team on a rainy Thursday evening and suffered a Mid Penn Commonwealth defeat.
Chambersburg coach Joey Wilmot said, "We had a game plan that worked when we executed it, but when we strayed away from it, we got burnt. We tried to take Mechanicsburg's best players out of the game and not allow them to beat us, but they still did. I believe they have the best midfielder, best defender and best goalie in the conference and those three guys played great today."
For the Trojans (4-6, 3-5 MPC), Matt Tucker scored twice and added an assist, and Ryan Cosey, Blake Dupont, Blake Hitchens and Aydan Younkin each scored a goal. Quinn Makosy contributed 2 assists and Tavian Ferguson added one.
"So far this year, the vast majority of our scoring has come from four guys," Wilmot said. "We got a couple of goals from other guys and that was great to see and should bode well for the second half of the season. We just need to work on not allowing a run (of goals) by the other team to build into more.
"Several times in the past few games, we've lost our composure and it's cost us."
Kellen Sanders made 10 saves in goal for the Trojans.
