Chambersburg roundup: Baseball team rallies in 7th to beat CD

BASEBALL
Chambersburg 2, Central Dauphin 1: The Trojans accepted a gift in the bottom of the seventh inning from the Rams and turned it into a comeback victory in a Mid Penn Commonwealth matchup at Greene Township Park on Monday afternoon.

Brycen Murray

Chambersburg (3-8, 2-6 MPC), which had only 2 hits in the game, was issued 2 walks and Central Dauphin made 3 errors in the seventh, allowing the Trojans to turn a 1-0 deficit into a win.

"We'll take a win any time and any way we can get them," Trojan coach Scott Folmar said.

CD (3-6, 1-5 MPC) brought in reliever Charlie Long for the seventh and he walked the leadoff batter, Brycen Murray. Kadyn McMullen bunted the ball, and an error was made when Long's throw to second was wild. Then Harrison Benedict bunted and Long overthrew the first baseman, allowing Murray to score.

An intentional walk to Ryne Mills loaded the bases and brought the CD infield in. Wyatt Martin hit a weak grounder back to Long, who made an underhanded toss to the catcher. But the ball was dropped, enabling McMullen to score the winning run.

Folmar said, "We were talking about it later and we think the catcher maybe took his eyes off the ball, maybe thinking about catching it and trying for a double play at first base."

Martin was the beneficiary after he threw a fine game on the mound. Martin gave up only 4 hits to the Rams, no earned runs, 3 walks and had 2 strikeouts.

"Martin was phenomenal," Folmar said. "Like the game we got from Mullen (last Thursday), he pounded the strike zone and let the defense work. And outside of an error in the first that led to their run, we played well on defense."

SOFTBALL
Central Dauphin 2, Chambersburg 0: The Trojans thought they had tied the game in the sixth inning, but a call reversed a home run and was a huge factor in the Rams' Mid Penn Commonwealth victory in Linglestown on Monday afternoon.

Karley Skultety

With Bree Paetow on first base, Chambersburg's Karley Skultety stepped in against CD pitcher Stella Gasper and deposited a shot over the fence in right field for what appeared to be a tying 2-run homer.

However, the umpire on the bases said that Paetow left the base too soon, so she was called out and the home run was wiped out (it's ruled "no pitch").

Trojan coach Chris Skultety said, "I can't believe they would make that call on the fifth pitch of an at-bat, when both teams were doing it the whole game. And to do it on a home run? It just took the life right out of us. We had just gotten all the momentum, but then they made that call, and you can't come back from that."

Chambersburg (8-3, 5-3 MPC) collected only 5 hits and a walk off Gasper and fanned 6 times. Trojan pitcher Kori Leedy allowed 7 hits, with 2 walks, and gave up only one earned run against Central Dauphin (8-2, 6-1 MPC).

"Just a very frustrating game," Skultety said. "We had people on base and couldn't get the big hit. We have to get the bottom of our order hitting; we have to be able to move runners up."
