FAYETTEVILLE — Chambersburg's softball team did not put Avon Grove pitcher Elle Burns under a lot of pressure in Monday's state playoff game.
But when the Trojans did force the issue, they received some serious breaks and took advantage of them.
And that was enough, as Kori Leedy pitched another gem of a game in a 3-1 Chambersburg win over the Red Devils in a PIAA Class 6A first-round game at Norlo Park.
The Trojans (19-5) will play in the quarterfinals on Thursday against District 7 champion Hempfield Area (22-1), which edged State College 2-1 in the first round. Avon Grove (21-5) was eliminated.
"It was not our best day of baserunning," Chambersburg coach Chris Skultety said. "We tried to do a bit too much and made a couple of mistakes. But we were trying to create some breaks, and when we got 'em, we did take advantage."
Burns retired the first seven Trojan batters until Marley Onomastico reached first base on an error by the third baseman.
"The other girls were saying (Burns) was throwing the ball inside a lot," Onomastico said. "That works for me because I like inside pitches. I just backed off the plate a little. I just had to find a way to get on base."
Then all heck broke loose. Erissa Varner laid down a bunt toward first base that first baseman Gabby Beltran picked up and threw to first. The ball glanced off the glove of second baseman Lila Klimas and rolled into short right field.
Onomastico, already on the run, never slowed down and scored easily. Varner did not immediately run toward second, then should have been caught in a rundown. The throw was never made, however, and Varner retreated to first.
After an out, Varner took off for second and got there in time for the steal. The throw, however, was missed by Avon Grove and also got past the centerfielder all the way to the fence, allowing Varner to scamper home for a 2-0 lead.
The Red Devils scored their only run off Leedy in the top of the fourth inning with two outs. Leedy gave up her only walk of the day, to Keaton Krech, on a 3-2 pitch. Klimas followed with a double to right-center to bring in Krech.
Leedy (18-5) ended up with a four-hitter, with just one walk and five strikeouts. Of her 97 pitches, 68 were for strikes. She got Avon Grove to make 11 fly-ball outs to the outfield and four more pop-ups in the infield.
"Kori was the reason we won today," Skultety said. "She really kept them off-balance."
Onomastico, who plays right field, said, "It does seem like (the outfielders) are getting more fly balls late in the year. Maybe it's because we're playing better teams."
Varner, in left field, made the best catch, coming in quickly to snag a low line drive hit by Michaela Sycalik in the sixth.
Onomastico was a part of Chambersburg's final run. Leedy dropped a single into center field and Onomastico singled to center. Courtesy runner Emrie Fetterhoff was caught trying to advance to third, but Onomastico advanced to second on the play. She came in to score on a line single to left by Bree Paetow.
